We have introduced some guidelines around the use of lithium batteries due to their tendency to catch fire. Lithium battery fires are difficult to put out, and can cause significant damage to the surrounding environment. If you are bringing a lithium battery with you, please heed the following:
Large Lithium Batteries (EVs, Motorhomes, RVs)
Large lithium batteries can be found in Electric Vehicles and, often, embedded in motorhomes and other RVs (where they power various devices):
• Do not bring an EV or RV if it has recently been in an accident, as this increases the risk of the battery catching fire, which can happen weeks after the initial accident.
• Do not bring an EV or RV where the battery has been modified and/or not professionally installed.
• Download the ANCAP Rescue app, which provides first responders with details of a registered vehicles structure and potential hazards.
Medium Lithium Batteries (sleep APNEA machines, mobility devices)
Mobility devices such as mobility scooters can contain lithium batteries and can be a fire risk:
• Ensure your battery is in good working order, checking the cables and connections.
• If you are charging a device, ensure you are using a compliant lead. Do not leave such devices charging unattended.
Small Lithium Batteries (phones and battery charging packs, vapes)
The main risk of fire with small devices is from poor quality leads, which lead to overcharging.
• Please don’t leave anything charging unattended or overnight.
• Charge on non-combustible surfaces and away from combustible items such as tents and bedding materials.
• Keep out of direct sunlight and keep dry.
• Please use only compliant leads and use according to specifications.
Used vapes can be recycled at Helper Huts. This helps keep the lithium batteries out of the waste streams.
Some warning signs to look out for include:
• Pungent odours
• Discolouration, blistering, bulging and swelling of the casing
• Leaking electrolyte
• Heating up and feeling hot to the touch
• Abnormal popping, hissing or cracking sounds, smoke and fumes
Call for help ASAP if your device or battery displays any of the above. Never touch a swollen or ruptured device or battery with bare hands, as the heat and/or chemicals can cause severe burns.
